Awareness of her growth brings a glow to her face as she proudly shows off her A’s. The difference she sees in herself is as if the dyslexia never existed.
I thought dyslexia was simply defined as the switching of d’s and p’s. However, I have quickly learned that it is so much more. My daughter struggled for so long with homework, reading, and writing that I thought she would be “stuck” in that place forever. She had holes in her reading and writing that were inexplicable. I tried everything I knew to help her. I purchased computer programs and books in an effort to help her. In the end we were in the same place as when we began. Homework was still a nightmare. Reading continued to be painful. Spelling and writing were still too much to handle.
In four short months she has not only grown academically but in her self-confidence. She was able to write a five-paragraph essay on her own. Her spelling tests are coming home with A’s on them. And she wants to participate in a reading contest that her class is having. To say that she will just have to “deal” with it is so far from the truth. She is on the road to overcoming her dyslexia and that makes this mom so glad that she invested in her future.
