Calm, cool and collected he sat there in his desk chair across from me. This was a huge difference from just a few months ago. Crying, scrambling, and refusing are what he used to present me with upon arriving. With barely 15 minutes left before our appointment was over, I realized that we had completed nearly everything on our agenda. Boy, would he be excited when he found out we had time for a game…any game he wanted.
This young man has achieved a “new normal.” Although he still has his meltdowns here and there, they are no longer a daily occurrence. Instead of a tantrum every morning before school, getting ready for the day is becoming easier. Homework is being completed with fewer battles. They happen sometimes, but not everyday. His teachers are sending home great reports about behavior and cooperation.
The changes happen in small steps. So small, you may not even notice the difference from one day to the next. Its only after reflecting back a few weeks or months that the “new normal” becomes apparent.
